Small discussion groups are called ATs. AT stands for “apprentice teacher.” Beginning and intermediate language courses at Davidson have required small group meetings as a supplement to regular class meetings for decades. In language courses the AT section provides a space for practicing course material. In Humes advanced students lead beginning students in focused, intimate conversations about the course material. AT sessions in Humes are required course meetings, just as in language courses, not unlike how a weekly lab or workshop session is required for some courses in the natural sciences and some social sciences.
